Dabbling in online outreach

After an arduous planning session with top Töads, it was decreed that the Meädow needs even more feminine energy. Since none of the Töads present had any experience with online advertising, we decided that online advertising is the best way to achieve this objective.

Facebook ad campaigns let you target your ads to a ridiculously specific audience. While deciding where to target your ads, Facebook tells you the potential reach of your ads.

Now for the hard numbers….

There are 6.8 million people in the Facebook universe that are interested in belly dancing — the ancient art form of subtle sexiness that has spread from the Middle East throughout the globe.

There are 5.6 million people in the Facebook universe that like twerking — that flash in the pan, in your face, dance style that has spread from the Caribbean islands to American rap videos to the Video Music Awards.

6.8 vs 5.6 million. I was hoping the numbers would be more lopsided than that. Belly dancers have mystique and tradition behind their art. Twerkers are one vowel away from being tweakers, but even so, they’re sexy, too.

Twerkers and belly dancers are of course both welcome at Töad Meädow. Tweakers — Stay home.

I wonder though, what the difference in the numbers says about society as a whole? Can we even infer anything from Facebook likes? Facebook has built their whole business on slicing and dicing these sorts of figures, and their current market capitalization is $215 billion, so there’s got to be something to it, right? What does it say about society that belly dancers, after thousands of years of history, only have a 20% advantage vs. the twerkers born a few years ago?
